Sociology is a positive science that studies the interaction between society and the individual, social structure, harmony and conflict within the social structure. Although there has always been an interaction between human beings and society in the history of the world, it was in the 19th century that this interaction became a science and was called sociology. The term sociology was first coined by Auguste Comte, combining the Latin socius (friend, companion) and the Greek logos (science). In addition to Comte, Marx, Weber and Durkheim are considered to be the founders of sociology. In Turkey, sociology began to be taught as a university course with Ziya Gökalp. Mübeccel Kıray, Hilmi Ziya Ülken, Şerif Mardin and Behice Boran are also important names who contributed to the development of sociology in Turkey. Sociology interacts with psychology, anthropology, politics, law, economics and many other sciences. Sociologists can specialise in areas such as family, crime, demography, migration, urban, gender, environment, culture, economy, politics and law.
Social change is an inevitable phenomenon and what is important is the speed and direction of social change. For the positive progress of social change it is important to understand the harmony and conflict between different sub-groups in social life and to identify their causes. Today, the disappearance of local boundaries due to globalisation has led to an increase in the speed and dimensions of interaction between subgroups. In understanding social events that take place across both global and local boundaries, sociologists have a major role to play.
